Description
J. EDGAR HOOVER
(1895 - 1972) Controversial Director of the F.B.I. who built the organization into the world's finest investigative agency. T.L.S. on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Oct. 14, 1959 to noted cartoonist Oscar Berger. Hoover thanks Berger for sending a copy of "American Artist", but declines to sit for a portrait, citing: "...the heavy pressure of official matters...requires me to travel...often at a moment's notice". Very good. Of course, it would have been completely out of character for Hoover to have permitted an artist to caricature him!
