Snuff Box, hallmarked Birmingham, 1845, W & E Turnpenny, shaped rectangular form, engine turned, gilt interior, with presentation inscription, "Presented to/Sergeant Edward Barlow/by the Officers of the Stockport/troop of Hussars/as a mark of respect to him/for having served for a period of/twenty five years/in the above troop/May 1st 1846", total weight 95 gm, 8cm x 5cm x 2cm Purchased: Bourdon-Smith, 1994, with original Eggleton notes Catalogue Note: 'Stockport was the scene of heavy rioting during the Chartish Riots in 1842. In 1846, the Corn Laws were repealed and unrest diminished. Stockport Troop of Hussars was almost certainly involved in the anti-riot measures in that town, and this is a reminder of that very unsettled period'. Brian Eggleton
