Paul Klee (1879-1940)

Born in the Swiss town of Münchenbuchsee near Bern, Paul Klee studied painting from 1900 at the Munic academy under Franz von Stuck after having taken private drawing lessons. He travelled to Italy and Paris. From 1906 on Klee again lived in Munic and learned about works by van Gogh and Cezanne, which influenced him. The later acquaintance with artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Franz Marc and August Macke, with whom he undertook an artistically fruitful trip to Tunis in 1914, had influence on his artistic development. From 1920 to 1931 he taught at the newly founded Bauhaus in Dessau and then switches to the Düsseldorf Academy. When he had to give up teaching there under pressure from the National Socialists in 1933, Klee moved back to Switzerland, where after a long illness he created a large and important late work.
