Lithographs by Max Liebermann fetch up to more than 9.000 euro at international auctions

This lithograph was made in 1924 by the German Impressionist and president of the Berlin Secession Max Liebermann (1847-1935). It is dedicated to ‘The Mothers of the Twelve Thousand’ (Den Müttern der Zwölftausend) and shows a desperate mother in grief. To her right side another woman kneels in front of a grave on which the Star of David is visible. The area is hazily recognizable as a cemetery. The work, a memorial sheet for the ‘Reichsbund jüdischer Frontsoldaten’ (Association of Jewish Front Soldiers) is an important historical document.



The lithograph by Max Liebermann is signed in the stone on the lower left and on the lower right in pencil ‘M. Liebermann’. It has been trimmed in the lower margin (through the caption). The sheet is toned, mat stained and slightly foxed, otherwise in good condition. Verso the lithograph is mounted in two places on the upper edge under a mat (reversible). The frame shows slight signs of wear. The overall dimension are 81 x 61 cm and the sheet measures 69.3 x 56.3 cm.



Max Liebermann (1847-1935)

The painter and graphic artist Max Liebermann (1847-1935) from Berlin is one of the most important representatives of German Impressionism. He worked as the president of the Berlin Secession, and was the director of the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts from 1920 to 1933, from which he resigned after the claim of power by the Nazis. Liebermann’s early works are characterized by a naturalistic style and a socially critical approach. His main body of work, however, has been influenced by the French Impressionists from 1880 onwards. Liebermann’s work symbolizes the transition to classical modernism, which the painter promoted with the Berlin Secession.
