This is a characteristic mixed media on paper by the French artist James Coignard (1925-2008). He created it as etching in colors, collage and tied in thread on laid paper. In the late 1960s, Coignard began working with the carborundum technique, as its master he is regarded today. His mixed media techniques and his works on paper are remarkable in a deep, heavy structure as distinctive characteristic of his art.



The print is signed lower right in pencil ‘J. Coignard’ and numbered lower left in pencil ‘6/75’. Verso is a blue stamp of ‘Transworld Art’. The work is in very good condition. The full sheet image measures 75.5 x 57.5 cm.



James Coignard (1925-2008)

The French painter, etcher, sculptor and ceramist discovered his interest in art at the age of 23 and decided to study applied arts in Nice. The first exhibition of his work took place in 1949 in Beaulieu-sur-mer. This is where he meets Braque, Matisse and Chagall. The encounter with Paul Hervieu in 1950 was also decisive for his career; through the representation in Hervieu’s gallery, Coignard was able to receive recognition, especially in Scandinavia. A turning point in his artistic work marks the discovery of the carborundum etching technique through his friend Henri Goetz in 1968. From now on etching builds and essential part of his work and at the same time his international recognition accelerates. (tm)
