The present abstract composition is a typical color lithograph by Sonia Delaunay-Terk and was made in the 1960s/70s. The artist was a member of the artist group ‘LEF/left federation of the artists of Moscow’ and also followed the group ‘ZENIT’ in Zagreb from 1921 to 1926. The artist later moved to Paris, where she married the painter Robert Delaunay. The artist couple eventually initiated and developed a central movement of abstract painting, called Orphic Cubism. The present work is a beautiful example of the artistic output of that period.

The color lithograph is signed with pencil lower right ‘Sonia Delaunay’ and numbered with pencil lower left ‘45/75‘. The sheet is slightly toned and shows a mat stain due to the passe-partout. There are traces of a former mounting (with adhesive strips) along the edges. The sheet is now mounted under passe-partout en verso at two points on the upper edge. The image size is 59.5 x 44.5 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 74 x 53 cm. The framed work measures 81 x 64 cm.

Sonia Delaunay-Terk (1885-1979)

Sonia Delaunay-Terk was the first living artist to have a retrospective in 1964 at the Louvre. She began studying at the age of 18 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. She then continued her studies at the Académie de La Palette in Paris. In her first marriage she was married to the gallery owner Wilhelm Uhde and in her second marriage to the painter Robert Delaunay. Together with Robert she founded Orphism, an art movement of geometric abstraction. During the First World War she lived in Portugal and in Spain. After her return to Paris, she remained close to abstraction in her work and also created fabric designs and theatre costumes. The artist is a member of the French Legion of Honor. Shortly before her death, she donated her printed body of work to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. (cbo)
