The aquatint etching presented here by Chilean artist Roberto Matta was created in 1975. It is part of a series titled ‘L'Arc obscure the heures’, including 10 aquatint etchings in colors. The image shows an antique like coastal landscape with abstract figures in front of a temple ruin, which illustrate the confrontation with the world of mythical demonic characters of ancient Mexican art, executed in Mattas distinctive, abstract surreal style.



The etching is provided lower right with the artist signet in pencil and numbered lower left ‘101/125’. The sheet is skillfully mounted on the upper edge at two points and matted. It is overall in very good condition. Plate size: 49 x 68.5 cm; sheet size: 59.5 x 82.5 cm; overall dimensions framed: 89.5 x 71.5 cm. The frame with slight traces of use.



Roberto Matta (1911-2002)

Matta was born in 1911 in Santiago de Chile. He studied architecture in Chile and later moved to Paris where he worked for Le Corbusier. He travelled a lot across Europa and met amongst others Federico García Lorca, Salvador Dalí and André Breton. Breton declared him to be a Surrealist and Matta really felt a connection to this group of artist. But first, he only wrote about architecture in a surrealistic magazine. He started painting himself in 1938 and immediately participated in the great Surrealism Exhibition in Paris. To avoid the war, Matta moved to New York, where he was very quickly accepted as an artist. He returned to Europe in 1948 and moved to Rome. Matta’s art has always been politically influenced and many of his drawings show that. (cru)
