Description
DESCRIPTION: These are courting mirror circa early 1800s and colonial treen makeup pot with remaining wax makeup circa 1700s, both from New England. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth century a young woman’s suitor gave her a vanity mirror that became known as a courting mirror. With the high cost and relative scarcity of good mirror glass, they were the careful work of a skilled cabinetmaker. The glass in the courting mirrors ranged from six to twelve inches in size. The molded frames were finished with oil or varnish and made of maple, cherry, walnut and pine woods. The courting mirror is made of a walnut frame and finely beveled glass. The back of the courting mirror is finished with fine detail and precision to secure the expensive glass mirror. The courting mirror is a perfect size for a table top placement. The average colonial American woman wore little or no makeup. Makeup was common for women of upper class found in the cities of Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. Fire Screens were put between a woman and the fireplace to prevent the heat from melting her wax makeup. Hence the words of wisdom “Don’t crack a smile” or “Mind your own Bees Wax”. The makeup pot is hand turned with the initials “EA” of the owner on the bottom. Perhaps it was a gift from an adoring husband or an admiring suitor. There is a sliding wooden lid that is secured by a screw that allows the lid to turn. Makeup wax still remains in the wooden treen pot. MEASUREMENTS: Courting mirror is 7 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 3/4 inch high. Makeup pot is 3 inches long, 2 1/2 inches high, and 2 1/2 inches wide.
Condition
The courting mirror and makeup wax pot are in excellent condition with an age appropriate patina.
