Description
DESCRIPTION: These are a colonial wrought iron decorated open hearth cooking spoon and flesh fork "wedding wet" from New England, circa 1700's. The fireplace or hearth was the most important part of the early colonial home. Without it there would be no heat for comfort or cooking. Wrought iron implements were important and necessary for cooking. In many homes there would have been wrought iron essentials and often "wedding sets" would have been given to a bride and groom. An ornate set of cooking utensils made by a blacksmith would have included a wrought iron large spoon for stirring the contents of a sizable pot. A flesh fork was an important tool for cooking game over an open pit hearth fire. These early open hearth tools are long and large required for cooking over an open hearth fire. The spoon and the flesh fork were each forged out of a single piece of iron. The wrought iron colonial spoon has a small detailed rat tail hook for hanging and a wide bowl for stirring and serving stews. The wrought iron colonial spoon is pitted from over two centuries of use. The wrought iron colonial flesh fork is a "rare" four tine fork. The wrought iron colonial flesh fork has a flattened handle that tapers to a decorated, scribed, and turned bolster. The wrought iron colonial flesh fork has a rat tail hook for hanging. MEASUREMENTS: Wrought iron colonial spoon is 19 inches long and 3 ½ inches wide. Wrought iron flesh fork is 20 inches long and 1 ½ inches wide.
Condition
The wrought iron "wedding set" is in excellent condition with age appropriate wear and patina.
