Description

DESCRIPTION: This is a handmade walnut wood slide lid candle box from New England, circa early 1800s. When candles were the only source of light, having a safe strong storage box was of important. Handmade candles were soft and easily bent so they had to be stored lying flat. Since they were made of beeswax and or tallow, mice and other vermin were attracted to them. The slide lid candle box is handmade of walnut wood with a smoke grained slide lid top. The slide lid candle box has chamfered sides and was made by a master cabinetmaker. The slide lid candle box is finely dovetailed and has square nails that secure the bottom. MEASUREMENTS: 12 inches long, 5 inches wide and 4 inches high.

Condition

The walnut slide lid candle box is in excellent condition with age appropriate patina.
