Title: The History of Women
Author: William Alexander
Publisher: W. Strahan and T. Cadell; London
Printing Year: 1779 First Edtion, complete two-volume set bound in one book

Condition/Details: Bound in modern chocolate cloth boards with gilt embossing, this very early text is a scarce copy of the first edition, complete in two volumes, printed in London. It chronicles the history of women "from the earliest antiquity, to the present time; giving some account of almost every interesting particular concerning that sex, among all nations, ancient and modern." The tables of contents, introduction and advertisement are all present. The text was intended for a female readership and Dr. Alexander's gracious consideration for that anticipated audience is outlined in the advertisement as follows: "As the following work was composed solely for the amusement and instruction of the Fair Sex; and as their education is in general less extensive than that of the men; in order to render it the more intelligible, we have studied the utmost plainness and simplicity of language; have not only totally excluded almost every word that is not English, but even, as much as possible, avoided every technical term." The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with lightly toned pages, some scattered foxing/marks, and library markings. The book measures approximately 9" x 11.5" and contains 368 + 344 pages of main body with an index following in each volume. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $9.50
