Description
DESCRIPTION: This is a paint decorated German bride's box from the early 1800s. Bride’s boxes were made in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the 18th and 19th centuries and often brought to America by European immigrants. These boxes were often given as a bridal gift but they were used for storing wigs, hats, christening gowns, documents and even supplies for physicians. The bride’s box still retains the original blue dry milk paint. The lid on the bnde’s box is laced and joined with copper nails that have been paint decorated. The bride's box retains the original lacing that joins the bentwood bands. MEASUREMENTS: 18 inches long, 8 3/4 inches high, and 11 inches deep
