Description
Bond cert. #239. Issued at Bridgeport, Mono County on Mar. 20, 1878. Signed by Frank Shaw, Chairman of the county Board of Supervisors and the county auditor and treasurer. $50 denomination, $10% gold bonds were sold to fund the building of a wagon road from Antelope Valley, in Mono County, up the west Walker River to intercept the Sonora and Mono Wagon Road, onward to Big Meadows and then to Benton. A bond issue had previously funded the Sonora and Mono Wagon Road back in 1863. Red pen cancel indicates the bond was redeemed in 1886. A new wagon road was likely needed in 1878, as the frenzied stampede to Bodie was in full swing. In 1878, a Bodie businessman noted, “If there ever was a country cursed with bad roads and “toll gatherersâ€, we certainly believe that Inyo and Mono counties could carry off the palm†(Bodie Bonanza, Loose, 1979). Bond certificate is VF with two coupons attached at the right. Bridgeport, CA
