Description
During the American Civil War, both the Union and the Confederate side relayed heavily on volunteers for the war effort. The first call for reenlistment occurred in 1861. When the tide of war looked uncertain again in 1863- 1864, another reenlistment campaign took place. This poster most likely dates between July to November 1863. James W. Cartwright is listed as the Recruiting Officer for the 1st Veteran Vol. Infantry (56th Mass. Reg.). Cartwright was Boston native, born in 1842 and was just 20 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army. He was quickly promoted to Company "E," 44th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts. After his nine month term expired, he reenlisted in the summer of 1863 and was given the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. During this time Cartwright became a recruiting officer [REF http://www.rootsandrelatives.net/showmedia.php?mediaID=677]. The broadside was used to recruit back veterans soldiers to the war effort. One section from the broadside reads "our troops are now much exhausted by fatigue and sickness and they need and ought to have reinforcements, and it is a soldier's duty to relieve a brother solider…" Printed by Morrill & Son's Steam Job Printing House at 1 ½ Water Street in Boston. It measures 12 .60 x 8.25 and has some wear. The piece has been folded and creases have formed in the center that have caused some tears. There are also small tears on the sides. Burger Collection MA
