Description
This Merchants Union Express Co. stock differs greatly from the 1867 stock. This stock was issued after the merger of the American Express Co. and the Merchants Union Express Co. in November of 1868. This is stock no. 605 and it was issued to Joseph Godfroy of Detroit Michigan for 5 shares on December 8, 1868. This has a different design of vignettes and signatures. The vignette looks somewhat similar to the 1867 Merchants stock, but there are some major differences. On this stock, the image of the express carriage is being partially blocked by large boxes. There is also some influences from symbols commonly seen in American Express stocks including the seal that reads "Safety & Dispatch." The stock was signed by Secretary J.N. Knapp, Treasurer E.P. Ross and President, Wells Fargo. There is a 5c revenue stamp on the upper right corner. The printer is identified as J.H. Duyckinck. Measures 12.30"x 9.45. There is some wear including creases and some tears. Cancelled. Albany, NY
