Item Details
Description
Paul Berdanier (Frackville, Pennsylvania, 1879 - Long Island, 1961) A fine American etcher, painter and illustrator, Paul F. Berdanier studied art under Charles Hope Provost, in New York, Gustave Wolff, at the School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, and under Albert Gihon, in Paris. He began his career in St. Louis working mostly as a designer of historical settings and stage costumes. After winning several awards in Missouri, Berdanier moved to Paris, France shortly after the end of World War One. He remained there until about 1929 when he settled in New York. During his time in Paris, he exhibited his art at both the Salon d'Automne and at la Nationale des Beaux-Artes. Berdanier was a full member of the Society of American Etchers. His art is included in the permanent collections of many museums in both America and France. Offered here is the original etching plate "Winter Canal Scene", approx. 3-3/8 x 5-1/4". Provenance: the Anderson-Lamb Co., Brooklyn, NY. This company was among the best printers of etchings in the country. It was their firm that hand-printed most of the etchings offered by American Associated Artists Gallery in NYC. The lithographs were printed by George Miller. All printing would be done by hand, with Miller and Lamb receiving 25 cents per impression, paper and ink included. A color etching pulled circa 1935-45 is included, trimmed to image and laid down. The original etching plate has a protective varnish coating but can be removed if someone wants to pull etching from the plate.
