Description
DESCRIPTION: This is a woven black ash splint farm-gathering basket with maker’s initials from New England, circa 1800s. The basket is made using wide black ash splints with a swing handle. The maker’s initials are burnt into the carved black ash swing handle. The black ash swing handle basket would have held corn, potatoes, and tomatoes from the farm harvest. The handle is attached to the sides of the basket with old solid rivets. There is lots of staining on the inside of the basket from use and the basket sits slightly askew for picking and gathering from the garden. The rim on the basket is made with strong bentwood bands and the rim is crisscrossed with wide black ash splints, for strength and durability. The Antique Basket is in Strong, Study and in. It just does not get any better than American Antique Basketry! MEASUREMENTS: 16 inches wide, 12 inches high not including swing handle, and 47 inches round in circumference.
