Description
DESCRIPTION: This is a handmade woven oak cooler style basket with swing handle and lid from New England circa 1800s. This basket would have been used to hold food and drink requiring refrigeration for a picnic. The oak cooler style basket was handmade using 1 inch wide oak splints. The oak cooler style basket has a 1 ½ inch wide oak splint that is attached with copper tack joinery. The basket has a carved bentwood oak swing handle that is attached with rivets. The oak cooler style basket has an oak wood lid top with a turned knob grip. There is a metal insert that was painted black at some point in time. There is a fiber insulation that was placed under the oak slats as in insulator for the picnic basket cooler. MEASUREMENTS: 15 inches high, 12 inches wide, and 36 inches round in circumference.
