Sukhothai Buddha Bronze Figure

The ‘walking Buddha’ is a form that was invented in the Sukhothai period. It can be interpreted as a visual depiction of Buddha’s descent from heaven, as well as his accessibility to his admirers. The making of a Buddha figure is considered a ‘good deed’ and is believed to have a positive influence on the rebirth in the next life. A Buddha statue is created according to certain characteristics, which were extended by the artists of the Kingdom of Sukhothai. Thus the Sukhothai style Buddha has an oval head, curved eyebrows, an aquiline shaped nose and a soft chin.

Condition: The bronze figure is in fair condition consistent with age. The feet are restored. The height measures 39 cm.

Provenance: Collection of Jack Zuberbühler, Switzerland
