Description

An unusual 19th century whale bone letter opener, with scrimshaw decoration depicting a whaling ship in pursuit of a whale, an American eagle, 'Liberty', 'Freetrader & Sailors Rights', and engraved name 'Abigail' and date 1861, the back engraved 'Forget Me Not', 9" (23cm) long.

Condition

There is a twist within the section of bone. Age related wear and marks, ink faded with colour loss and some rubbed detail. Minor chips and losses to edges.
