LANE ALLEN: (1902-1970) British Publisher, the founder of Penguin Books. T.L.S., Allen Lane, one page, 4to, West Drayton, Middlesex, 25th January 1940, to G. T. Garratt, on the attractive printed stationery of Penguin Books Limited. Lane sends his correspondent an account and cheque (no longer present) for the end of June, remarking 'Incidentally, nothing came of the Australian B.B.C. proposal'. Lane continues 'We are extremely busy at the moment, particularly on Specials. Pritt's new book MUST THE WAR SPREAD, which is due for publication on Monday next, should cause a flutter in the dove-cote' and concludes 'I am looking forward with interest to hear your opinion on the book of the Indian States….'
