Description
MUGGERIDGE MALCOLM: (1903-1990) English Journalist & Author, served in MI6 during World War II. T.L.S., Malcolm Muggeridge, one page, 8vo, Manchester, 15th February 1932, to [G. T.] Garratt, on the printed stationery of The Manchester Guardian. Muggeridge states that ('at one delighted gulp and with such relish') he has just read The Mugwumps and the Labour Party and congratulates his correspondent, remarking 'It's the first correct analysis of just what happened to the Labour party that's come my way. Also I'd been growing a little ashamed of being a mugwump and of writing in a paper by mugwumps for mugwumps. But now I see the point'. Together with Kingsley Martin (1897-1969) British Journalist, editor of the New Statesman (1930-60). A.L.S., Kingsley Martin, two pages, oblong 8vo, London, n.d., to Mrs. Garratt, on the printed stationery of The New Statesman and Nation. Martin apologises to his correspondent for having failed 'to do anything in the paper about the memorial concert', explaining that he has been furiously busy, is just about to leave for Yugoslavia, and has 'been doing a ridiculous amount of speaking & have been quite run of my feet'. Also including J. R. Ackerley (1896-1967) British Writer. A.L.S., J. R. Ackerley, two pages, 8vo, Broadcasting House, London, 20th October 1936, to [G. T.] Garratt, on the printed stationery of The Listener. Ackerley thanks his correspondent for their review of Yeats-Brown's book and continues 'I am quite satisfied with the reviews you send, & if you wish to make your dislike stronger when you receive the proof please do so. I think there are far too many books, & that reviewers are far too polite….we should not waste our time & space noticing bad books; I hope you will remember that when tackling any others I send you in the future; but when a bad book is obviously going to be widely read & discussed it must, like this, (about which I entirely agree) be reviewed - & with no half measures'.
