DOUGLAS WILLIAM SHOLTO: (1893-1969) British Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Commander-in-Chief Fighter Command 1940-42. Small collection of two T.Ls.S., Sholto, and an A.L.S., Sholto Douglas, three pages (total), 4to and 8vo, Ruislip, Middlesex and Denham, Buckinghamshire, 18th December 1963, 6th February 1964 & 20th March 1966, all to Maurice Benjamin, two on the printed stationery of British European Airways. In the first letter Douglas thanks his correspondent for a wonderful box of liquor and remarks 'I can see that all the drinks have been so carefully chosen, and we shall be drinking the health of you and Conchita for many months to come', in the second letter Douglas announces that BEA hope to launch the new Hawker-Siddeley Trident aircraft in the spring and 'To mark my forthcoming retirement from BEA on 31st March a special Easter Inaugural flight of the Trident to Vienna is to be arranged for my personal guests', further inviting Benjamin and his wife to join him on the occasion, adding 'A full, and I hope agreeable, programme has been drawn up for our stay in Vienna', and in the third letter Douglas states that he forwarded a letter to the Managing Director of Horizon and now encloses his reply (no longer present). Together with a hardback edition of Years of Command, the second volume of the autobiography of Douglas, First Edition published by Collins, London, 1966, signed and inscribed by Douglas in blue fountain pen ink to the front free endpaper and dated July 1966 in his hand.
