GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of the United Kingdom 1760-1820. A fine D.S., George R, (a good, large signature) as King, at the head, four pages, folio, Court at St. James's, 9th August 1800. The manuscript document is a warrant addressed to Sir James Pulteney, Lieutenant General and Commander-in-Chief of the Forces, to be 'employed on a particular service' and states, in part, 'an Act has been made and passed in this present Session of Parliament entitled "an Act for Punishing Mutiny and Desertion, and for the better payment of the Army and their Quarters"….We for the more effectually carrying the purposes of the said Act and Articles of War into execution within the Limits of your Command, have thought fit to direct, and We do hereby authorise and empower you from time to time as occasion may require, to convene, or cause to be assembled, General Courts Martial for the Trial and Punishment of Mutiny and Desertion, or any other offence committed against the Rules of Military Discipline' further outlining the structure and purpose of the Court Martial to 'contribute more to retain the Soldiers in due obedience to their Officers, and to make them diligent in discharging the Duty incumbent upon them' and instructing that any sentence 'be put in Execution, or to suspend, mitigate, or remit the same, as you shall judge best, and most conducive for the good of Our Service without waiting for Our further Orders, except in the case of Commissioned Officers convicted of Capital Crimes'. Countersigned at the conclusion by the Duke of Portland (1738-1809) British Prime Minister 1783, 1807-09 and Home Secretary 1794-1801. With integral leaf and the original thin red ribbons, and a blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light overall age wear, otherwise VG €500-750
