Description
In the manner of John Riley (1646-1691, English), "Portrait of a Woman in a Garden with a Spaniel," 18th c., oil on canvas, presented in a carved giltwood frame, H.- 48 3/4 in., W.- 39 1/4 in.
Condition
Condition consistent with age. Examined under ultra violet light. The canvas has been laid to a secondary canvas. Some brush hairs are detected within the composition and there is consistent craquelure throughout. Dust and mild fibrous debris are noted intermittently throughout. Some toned pinhead spots are observed near the chest and face on the lightest areas of the skin but are not distracting. Evidence of a later varnish is detected. The most notable inpainting is observed near the proper right shoulder, at the center of the chest, within the proper left hand, and intermittently to minor areas. Some areas of minor paint chip loss are noted. Lastly, there are slight inconsistencies regarding the glossiness of the finish of the piece, resulting in clusters or areas of dullness, observed mainly in the background and the skirt, but seems to occur intermittently throughout. A striking piece.
