2. MASTODON TOOTH An extinct species of the elephant-like mammals, the mastodons had heavy shaggy coats and long up-curving upper-jaw tusks. Mastodons were shorter in overall height and had shorter and thicker legs than their mammoth relatives. Offered is a large tooth fragment, approx 7"x3½"x2¼", weighing six pounds, with characteristic rounded and pointed enamel-covered cones and close-spaced roots. Nicely shellacked for preservation. A striking display fossil. Est: $60-80
