Autograph Musical Quotation Signed “Carelia” by Sibelius JEAN SIBELIUS, Finnish Composer. Autograph Musical Quotation Signed, “Jean Sibelius,” in black ink, with three bars written out on musical staves, 5.75” x 2.5”, Choice Very Fine or better. At the top he has written “Carelia,” which is the title of his Orchestral Overture and Suite (1893), one of his major works! A lovely, very clean and pleasing example. Karelia is also the name of a region in southern Finland where the runes, or traditional Finnish song-poems, were best preserved. Sibelius, whose reputation rests in part on his musical expression of the Finnish spirit, spent his honeymoon in Karelia the year before composing his pieces of the same name. Sibelius (1865–1957) was a highly personal, romantic composer, yet at the same time he represents the culmination of nationalism in Finnish music. Although Sibelius wrote chamber music, piano music, and violin music, he is best known for his orchestral works. These include tone poems on national subjects, such as En Saga (1892; rev. 1902) and Finlandia (1900); The Swan of Tuonela (1893; from the suite Lemminkainen); Valse triste (1904); a violin concerto (1903); and seven symphonies. His works express an intense, mystical love of nature, often conveying the brooding melancholy of his country's northern landscape. In his symphonies he adapted traditional form to his individual manner of building upon short motifs. These themes, while always original, have come to be regarded as folk music. In 1897 he was awarded a lifetime grant by the state which permitted him to devote his career to composing. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
