Description
[VIRGINIA] THOMAS HICKS WYNNE [1820 - 1875] American historian. Colonel Wynne was a frequent contributor to the Southern Literary Messenger in its most prosperous days; an active member of the Virginia Literary and Philosophical Society, and for some years before his death had been the corresponding secretary and librarian of the Virginia Historical Society, &emdash; to whose revival after the war he successfully devoted much time, labor, and money. He became thoroughly acquainted with the history of his native State, and of the contiguous States, and of their ancient families. Upon these subjects he was recognized as a high authority. He was a frequent contributor to the daily press. ALS, no date, no place {Virginia], 1p., to Col. Walter D. Blair. A pencil notation "My late friend Thomas H. Wynne" suggests this letter was written shortly before Wynne's death. This letter appears to be a notice from Wynne to Col. Balir to vacant on the 1st of December [some friend].
