Title: The Tomb of Alexander
Author: Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822)
Publisher: R. Watts for J. Mawman
Printing Year: 1805

Condition/Details: Bound in modern blue cloth boards with spine embossing, this antique text is a very scarce chronicling of the archaeological collections from the tomb of Alexander the Great. All the original plates are present, according to the illustration list and the binder's instructions. After the capitulation of Alexandria, Dr. Clarke was a key force in securing for England the statues, Sarcophagi, maps, manuscripts, etc. which had been collected by the French savants. Clarke was an accomplished mineralogist, chemist, cleric and was one of the founders of the Cambridge Philosophical Society in 1819. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with bright pages and library markings. The pages are in excellent condition, the book has clearly been handled very little during its 200 years. The volume measures approximately 8.25" x 10.5" and contains 161 pages followed by an errata list and the binder's instructions. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $8.50
