Description
A very nice gutta-percha and malacca cane of President Martin Van Buren. The gutta-percha "L" handle is 5 1/2" high and 3 1/8" to the side. On the stem portion, it depicts the high relief-molded image if Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States. He was elected in 1836 and succeeded President Andrew Jackson. (See Google for further information on Van Buren.) There is a 1/8" decorated thin gilt collar on a malacca shaft that ends with a 7/8" burnished brass ferrule. The overall length is 34 2/3" and the condition is very good. It is ca 1875, and probably made to commemorate past Presidents at America's Centennial. Estimate: $600-$800.
