Description
A very fine gutta percha veneer sword cane curio. Made entirely of gutta percha veneer that is fashioned in steps, it has a crook handle that measures about 7" along the arc and is about 7/8" thick. With a straight pull from a friction mount, a long 27 1/4" diamond-shaped steel blade that comes to a sharp point, can be withdrawn. It is identified at the top in Spanish, as having been made by Toledo, the famous blade maker from Spain. It has 11 2/3" of wonderful engraving done with green, red, and orange highlights, and it is in pristine condition. The cane ends with a 1 2/3" ferrous metal ferrule. The overall length is 38 1/3" and the condition is very good. It is perhaps Continental, made sometime in the early 20th Century, and it is a splendid example of the kind. Estimate $800-$1200.
