Description
A very fine Art Nouveau silver cane on snakewood. The petite silver handle is 2 1/4" high, 3" long, and about 1/3" at its thickest. It is wonderfully decorated in foliate designs with double reticulated top done in a typical Art Nouveau swirl. There is a tiny hallmark, probably French. Made to be carried as a fashion accessory, it has an ultra thin snakewood shaft that is beautifully figured and ends with a 1" horn ferrule. The overall length is 34 2/3" and the condition is very good. Several examples of Art Nouveau silver handles are shown in Dike's La Canne Objet D'Art beginning on page 300. It is ca 1900, and it is a marvelous example of the type, with a rare snakewood shaft. Estimate: $700-$900.
