Description
A great historical cane with a piece of telegraph cable. The flat mushroom horn handle is 1" thick and 1 1/2" across the top. Below it is a 2" piece of treated telegraph cable that is framed by two 3/4" bright brass rings. The top ring reads: "Gray Patent, Torpedo Cable" while the bottom ring says: "silvertown Telegraph Works London" (A copy of a 19th Century paper on the history of the making and treating of under water cable for the telegraph and harbor defense, etc., is included with this lot.) The Silvertown Telegraph works was located on the Thames River in the Docklands section of London. The shaft is thick, mahoganized hardwood that ends with a 7/8" horn ferrule. The overall length is 35 3/4" and the condition is excellent. It is ca 1880's, and it is a wonderful relic of England's glorious industrial past. Estimate: $1800-$2800.
