Description
The 1911 Dartmouth College cane of Chet Butts. Made entirely of a single piece of hardwood, it has a handle that is 3 1/4" high and 2" at its widest. It depicts in fine detail the bust of the famous Dartmouth Indian with black-painted hair and a stern countenance. Incised with a knife on its collar is: "Chet Butts, 1911" for the owner and year of graduation. There is a 1 1/8" lined area where a silver collar was once placed, that is now missing. Below it, in an oval cartouche, the American Great Seal is carved, just above the Dartmouth College Seal. Additionally, the entire shaft is carved with initials, names and nicknames of the classmates of Chet Butts. (Such canes were often called "Senior Canes", because only graduating seniors were allowed to have them. It was the custom to have one's classmates sign your cane with their jack-knives.) A 1 1/2" white metal and iron ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 34 1/8" and the general condition is very good. On page 86 of Dike's Canes in the United States, there is a great, interesting history of Dartmouth College canes with pictures of some examples. Estimate: $500-$700.
