Description
A very nice Japanese bamboo cane of a family of monkeys. It has a natural root handle that measures about 2" high and 1 1/2" at its widest. Extending down the shaft are four wonderfully relief-carved groupings of 6 macaque monkeys that are realistically stained and tinted. The piece ends with a 1 1/3" white metal and iron ferrule. The overall length is 36" and the condition is excellent. It was perhaps exported to America, ca 1890. It is a better example of the type. Estimate: $450-$650.
