Description
A great doctor's gadget cane with silver handle. It measures 3 2/3" high and 1 1/3" across the top. Chased on the stem is a 2 1/3" long caduceus, the symbol of medicine. The caduceus features wings and two encircling snakes. The matte black hardwood-veneered shaft comes apart by friction at three places to reveal the doctor's kit. At the first compartment, there is a glass syringe with a plunger. At the second compartment, there are four cork-topped glass tubes for small tools, liquids, pills, etc. The third and final compartment holds a paper tube with some gauze for making an emergency bandage. A 1 1/4" bi-metal ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 34 1/4" and the condition is very good. It is probably French, ca 1890, and it is a fine, useful example of the kind. Estimate: $2000-$3000.
