Description
A very good drill sergeant's pace stick gadget cane. The dark hardwood knob handle is 1 1/4" high and 1 1/2" across the top. There is a 1/3" lined old brass collar that is inscribed: "Kohler & Son, Makers, London", who worked from 1780 to 1907 when they were taken over by Swaine & Adeney. The body of the cane is made of varnished hardwood, perhaps maple, and it has various brass fittings, hinges and set screws. It opens to reveal a notched transversal rod the can be moved and fixed when measuring a marching pace. The length could be varied thus to program the timing of a parade or a march. All parts are present, including a 2 1/4" split brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 37" and the condition is very good. A picture of a pace-stick is shown on page 219, 21/6, of Cane Curiosa, by Dike. It is ca 1895, and it is a fine example of the kind. Estimate: $500-$700.
