Description
A very nice Gettysburg Battlefield relic cane of wood from Meade's Headquarters. Made of a hickory branch, it has a long, crooked, natural bark handle that is 9" high and 1" at its thickest point. Below it, fashioned in poker burning or "pyrography", are random dots and lines done for decoration. Written in a cartouche is: "Gettysburg, July 1-2-3 1863, Wood From Meade's Headquarters" in very faded lettering. It never had an original metal ferrule. The overall length is 34 3/4" and the general condition is very good. It is ca 1880, and such items were often made by battlefield guides post Civil War, to supplement their meager veteran's pensions. (Please see Google for much information on Meade's Headquarters along with pictures.) Estimate: $500-$700.
