Description
A very nice bust of John Wesley. The ebony handle is 2 1/4" high and 1 1/2" at its widest. It depicts in fine detail, John Wesley, English theologian educated at Christ Church, Oxford, and generally accepted as the founder of Methodism. (See Wikipedia) There are bars of Mother-of-Pearl at his chest that simulate the ends of his white cleric's tie. There is a 7/8" scroll-decorated gold plated collar initialed: "J.C.", for the cane's owner. The shaft is mahoganized hardwood that ends with a gently worn 7/8" brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 35 1/2" and the condition is very good. It is English, ca 1890, and it may have been made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death in 1791. Estimate: $750-$950.
