Description
A very good English cane of Lord Derby. The large hardwood handle is 4" high., and 2" at its widest. It depicts in detailed form, Edward Smith Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby, who retired as Prime Minister because of illness in 1868, preceding Queen Victoria's confident, Benjamin Desraili, the only Jewish born PM to have ever served in England. (See Wikipedia). The handle shows Lord Derby with his gray hair and scruffy beard. The shaft is hardwood, perhaps beech, that ends with a 1" horn ferrule. The overall length is 37" and the condition is excellent. It is ca 1885, and it is a fine English political example, fashioned in wood. Estimate: $850-$1250.
