Description
A very nice early cane with the name "John Hancock, 1776" on it. The whale ivory knob handle is 1 1/8" high and 1 1/3" across the top. Inlaid on top is a 7/8" smooth, coin silver disc as a decorative highlight. There is a 2/3" coin silver collar inscribed in large, flowing script: "John Hancock, 1776". The shaft is heavy, stained hardwood, perhaps live oak, with large, round silver eyelets. A 1 1/3" white metal ferrule that has had a screw driven into its tip, completes the piece. (This cane was found in Massachusetts several years ago in storage along with other unrelated antiques. and is without any separate provenance. We cannot attest that it was indeed a cane that might have belonged to the famous signer of the Declaration of Independence. It is ca 1840's, and may have been made to commemorate the 60th or 75th Anniversary of the signing, with the first and most famous signatory inscribed on it. It is pure speculation at this point.) The overall length is 34 1/4" and the condition is very good. It is a very interesting, well-made example that could be of historical importance. Estimate: $850-$1250.
