A very nice staghorn whistle gadget cane. The staghorn "L" handle is 3/4" at its thickest and 4 1/4" long. It has a dull point at one end and there is a drilled hole to accommodate a storage or carrying cord. At the shaft end, a mouthpiece has been fashioned along with an angled slot for air release, and when operated, a sharp, shrill whistle is emitted. (Such items were often used for hailing cabs or for security alerts.) There is a 1/2" silver collar on an ebonized hardwood shaft that ends with a 7/8" horn ferrule. The overall length is 34 1/8" and the condition is very good. It is probably English, ca 1900 and it is a good example of the kind. Estimate: $500-$700.
