Description
Johann Georg Gmelin (German, 1810-1854) The Amalfi Coast signed lower left "Gmelin" and with indistinct date oil on canvas 68 x 96cm (27 x 37in)
Condition
Oil on herringbone weave canvas, unlined. Recently restored and with conservation report available. Conservation report reads: The canvas and stretcher are in generally good condition. There is a thick layer of surface dirt largely made up of carbon residue and dust. There are two areas of serious damage: a small round hole near the lower left corner, clearly a puncture from the rear, and on the right side of the painting, a vertical frontal tear about an inch long. The paint layer is flaking around both areas of damage. There is extensive craquelure throughout the painting, consistent with handling and transit over the years, and in the centre of the canvas caused by pressure on the central strut of the stretcher. This is causing some of the paint layer to detach from the canvas.
