Description
This lot features an antique hand tinted photograph of Sam Tilden. Sam Tilden was the nephew of Chief Joseph and a member of the Nez Perce Tribe. Born in 1868, Tilden was about 10 years old when the Nez Perce were fleeing from the U.S. Cavalry. Prior to Chief Joseph's famous surrender to the government in which the Nez Perce were banished to Oklahoma, Tilden and his family were able to escape into the mountains of north central Montana. They moved to Canada for a short time but eventually returned to Montana. Much of his adult life was spent living on the Flathead Indian Reservation and the Lapwai Idaho where he served as a tribal law enforcement officer. Tilden passed away in 1965 at the age of 97. This is an original photograph. It is in good condition. The photograph measures 8" x 13.25"
