Item Details
Description
COL A very interesting collection of memorabilia related to two pioneers of aviation, Charles Lindbergh and Earle Ovington. The first item is a pair of stamps issued by Panama (Sc.#256) and by Cuba (Sc. #C2) to celebrate Lindbergh`s 1928 Tour to Latin America. These are accompanied by a 1928 Lindbergh San Juan-St. Louis First Day Cover with Scott`s #649 and #C7 stamps. The envelope reads "This trail was blazed by C. A. Lindbergh, Feb. 4-13, 1928" and bears Lindbergh's printed portrait and printed signature. It was addressed to George T. Street, care postmaster in St. Louis and was postmarked "San Juan, Jan 9, 7 AM, 1929". Sold together with a 9 x 13.7cm black and white postcard of Earle Ovington and his aircraft. Inscribed and signed : "To Edgar C. Cantrell, from Earle Ovington, 1st US Air Mail Pilot (Sept 23 1911)". Signature produced by a process that involves a unique personalised autograph on frosted glass being laid ono photo paper and being exposed and developed with the image. Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974), who was the first man to cross the Atlantic in 1927 on non-stop flight, worked as a Air Mail Pilot from 1925 to 1928. In 1928 he undertook aboard the "Spirit of Saint Louis" the "Good Will Tour" to several countries of Latin America, carrying about 3,000 mail souvenir pieces and establishing new mail routes. Earle Lewis Ovington (1879-1936) was an American aeronautical engineer, aviator and inventor, and served as a lab assistant to Thomas Edison. Ovington piloted the first official airmail flight in the United States in a Bleriot XI in 1911. He carried a sack of mail from Garden City, New York to Mineola, New York. He circled at 500 feet and tossed the bag over the side of the cockpit and the sack burst on impact, scattering letters and postcards. He delivered 640 letters and 1,280 postcards, including a letter to himself from the United States Postal Service designating him as "Official Air Mail Pilot #1".
