Description
Victor Vasarely(Hungarian-French, 1906-1997)
ZEBRAS
signed vasarely (lower middle) and dated 1950 (on back).
tempera on canvas
24 by 31 1/2 in.
60.9 by 80 cm.
Vasarely was the founder of Op Art, a movement that focused on the deceptive effects of manipulated lines and shapes. He based his method on the rigid principles of the influential German art school, the Bauhaus, but transformed its use of harsh outlines and hard edges to produce anonymous, geometric and precise forms that play tricks on the eye. His is a fiercely anti-nostalgic art which, like the work of the Futureists in the 1920s, actively celebrated and embraced the machine age and the advance of technology. Vasarely has always seen his work as performing a social function in local communities, and it's graphic, illustrative quality has been most effective in the form of urban murals and three-dimensional architectonic structures.
