Bound in 3 volumes. xliv, 344; 345-730; (731)-1237 pp. Color map frontispiece, wood-engraved key plate and 34 hand-colored lithograph plates. (Folio) 32x25.5 cm (12½x10") later three-quarter red morocco and cloth, spines lettered in gilt, raised bands, top edges gilt. First Edition.

"The work gives a comprehensive account of the birds of the area and is intended as a text-book for the local student and collector in Ceylon. Our knowledge of the island is considerably increased by this work, which deals with altogether 371 species... The fine plates... were executed from drawings by J.G. Keulemans" (Anker). Anker 284; Fine Bird Books p 115; Nissern, IVB 539. Provenance: The library of ornithologist, author, and San Francisco industrialist Milton S. Ray, with his bookplate in first volume.

Condition

A few small scuffs to edges, small tear and chip to cloth of third volume; internally fine, plates bright and clean.
