Description
Pre-columbian Taino Anthropomorphic Three pointer from the Dominican Republic, ca. 1000-1500 A.D. This striking example features a stylized anthropomorphic face that depicts a skull-like human face with circular sunken orbits and nostrils. Carved from a dense, hard grey stone in the form of a skull with large eye sockets, big nose and a broad jaw. The protruding ear-like sections are deeply carved and geometric in form. The most dramatic element is the wide grimacing mouth and deeply carved nose, which dominates the face, whether viewed from above or in profile. In contrast, the reverse is very lightly incised with an abstract geometric design, including symmetrically arranged concentric circles, which may recall textile designs or tattoos worn by the Taino elite. Symmetry is a recurring feature in Taino art and may have had religious significance.
