Provenance: Dawson Gallery, Dublin;Where purchased by Harold Davis Esq;Private collection 'These peering heads, whose open mouths make dark apertures in the surface of the painting, stare aghast from within their own predicament...Since the outbreak of civil warfare in the North of Ireland in 1969, and in the context of that war, le Brocquy's painting of the anguished individual reaches an intensity of expression that carried his work onto an even more powerful level of art.'(1) We are grateful to the artist's son, Pierre le Brocquy, for his assistance in cataloguing this work. 1 Walker, Dorothy, Louis le Brocquy, Dublin: Ward River Press 1981; London: Hodder & Stoughton 1982, p. 53
