Inscribed Revolutionary War Officer's Pocket Watch, a fine paired-case watch, made by C. Bailey/London, and based on the touch marks on the sterling cases, it appears to have been made in 1777. Chain driven fuseé movement, white enameled dial with Roman numerals, decorative steel hands. Comes with short steel chain and key; diameter of outer case is 2.25". Back of inner case is engraved Col. Wm. Butler/4th PENN Regt/1779.
William Butler was one of the original members of the Society of Cincinnatus, aide de camp to General Alexander (1776-78), appointed Lt. Col. of 4th Pa. Regt. 1779-83. Attempted to quell a mutiny of several Pennsylvanian Continental Army Units in 1781 and barely escaped with his life. While this mutiny was something of a blot on the record of the 4th Regiment, overall they had quite a distinguished service record in the Revolution, seeing action at New York City, Northern New Jersey, defense of Philadelphia, Monmouth and Sullivan expedition against the Iroquois in both 1778 and '79.
